Saturday Matinee: And Then There's Madame

It's the weekend. What better time to relax by the flickering light of grainy old videos uploaded to the Internet? Thanks once again to YouTube - man's greatest-ever invention - it's another edition of Saturday Matinee.

Today's installment features two grand dames who made their mark in 1970s show business, Bea Arthur and Madame. Bea, of course, needs no introduction. But for those of you who weren't around or have suppressed your memories, Madame cut a wide swath through the puppet-loving heart of middle America in the late stagflation years. She even had her own show, Madame's Place - which locally used to air on Sunday nights just before my bedtime, and may explain why Lombaire Fan is still a light sleeper.

SPOILER: the following footage is disturbing on multiple levels. Enjoy.

You can add Madame to your MySpace list here.

I truly admire your YouTube mining skills and I am so grateful to you for solving a decades old mystery for me as I always thought Bea Arthur and Madame were one and the same. They didn't have split-screen technology in the 70s, right? That Madame was a hoot on Golden Girls, though.
The whole Rock Hudson thing...well, too easy and too obvious, I'll pass.

You know, Wayland and Rock were off stage left doing.....(good thing Bea and Madame were looking for Rock, stage right). They both could have been outed in the 70s, perhaps saving us all from the gossip, speculation and headlines when the two men passed. Hey, funny to note that both Bea and Madame are still with us. (well, maybe not so funny)

I think being the voice (and sometimes hand) behind a man-crazed, elderly puppet in a frock was pretty much the equivalent of outing yourself in those days.

Wow, Wayland and Madame, now that brings back the memories. After seeing Wayland working his puppetry magic with Madame back in the mid-seventies, I never shook another hand.

Sheesh L.F., really, ya think? Yeah, everyone knew about Wayland, both behind and in front of the camera. I was just trying to get some gossip going about Rock and Wayland, and you had to go and take me seriously. Foiled again. Where do I sign up for lessons in sarcasm, innuendo and gossip 101?

Anonymous, I think you can find that class at Fuck U. Their mascot is the horse you rode in on and their Web address is biteme@fu.edu. They grade on a curve there so you should do really well. :-P

blog fight!? I got my money on that anonymous one, oh but wait....Being that they were both comments from "anonymous" how can we be sure it's not just one crazy person fighting with their self?

Great clip, sposter. Now I see why you needed (need) so many therapists ;)

if there's a blog fight, my money's on the brilliantly witty anonymous.

I completely agree with that last comment.

Ok, it's been the better part of a week now and nothing new. Time to get off your lazy slacking duff, and write something in here.
